Thump-thump-thump is a familiar sound in the Adirondack woods in spring.
Researchers at SUNY ESF are exploring whether West Nile Virus (WNV) affects ruffed grouse populations across New York State. By surveying drumming male birds, testing hunter-submitted samples for WNV antibodies, and monitoring mosquito vectors of the virus, graduate student Ben Aker and Dr. Cynthia Downs hope to learn how this native, nonmigratory bird is faring in the face of this disease.
